Shin Fujiyama, a Japanese-American philanthropist, has dedicated his life to transforming education in Honduras. After immigrating to the U.S. from Japan, Shin settled in Virginia and graduated from the University of Mary Washington in 2007. A service trip to Honduras in 2004 deeply inspired him, leading to the founding of Students Helping Honduras (now One Thousand Schools) in 2006.
Starting from his dorm room, Shin’s initiative has built over 60 schools across Honduras, with a goal of 1,000 schools to break cycles of poverty and violence through education. His Virginia ties remain strong, with the organization headquartered in Fredericksburg and supported by Virginia communities and universities.
The annual “Brick by Brick” gala supports these efforts. The 4th Annual gala, held May 31, 2025, in McLean, Virginia, saw the Honduran American Association proudly co-sponsoring the event. This partnership highlights the shared commitment to creating opportunities for Honduran children through education.
